EMERUS is a socially responsible company dedicated to maintaining the highest standards and practices in the protection of human rights, labor relations, environmental protection and the fight against corruption. In all countries and regions where we operate, we strictly comply with local legal requirements and regulations. Our approach to managing sustainable development is based on clearly defined regulations, policies and codes.
The principles that guide our relationships with partners are clearly defined in our Code of Conduct for suppliers, customers and business partners.
EMERUS is dedicated to creating a working environment that enables every employee to work in safe and healthy conditions. We believe that health, industrial and fire safety are the basis for the stable operation of any production. By constantly identifying opportunities for improvement, providing the necessary training and equipment for safe work, and implementing a proactive health and safety management system, we aim to eliminate the risk of injuries at work and protect the health of employees and visitors. Our occupational health and safety management system is certified according to the ISO 45001 by independent accredited bodies, which confirms our commitment to the highest standards.
Aluminum stands out as one of the materials with the highest recycling rates worldwide. As much as 75% of the aluminum ever produced is still in use. Demand for aluminum, which is critical to a number of important industries such as construction, transportation and power transmission, is predicted to grow by more than 50% by 2050. Therefore, the aluminum industry plays an important role in the green transition, both at the European and global level.
Our commitment to environmental protection is visible in various segments of our production chain. We continuously strive to minimize our impact on the environment through all our business activities. Our production facilities comply with the international standard ISO 14001 for the environmental management system, which is confirmed by certificates issued by accredited independent bodies.
Almost 100% of our products are made using electricity from renewable sources , which is provided by hydropower plants and solar plants in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In addition, by installing our own solar power plant, we not only contribute to increasing the production of clean energy, but at the same time we strengthen our energy independence.
Aware of the importance of energy efficiency and its positive effects on the environment and the community, we continuously invest efforts in its improvement through various activities. These activities include the modernization of production with the use of modern equipment, the implementation of new, environmentally friendly technologies and the introduction of more efficient hydraulic systems that result in additional savings in electricity consumption.
Aluminum is one of the leaders of the circular economy. It is suitable for multiple recycling, without losing its original properties. Moreover, by recycling aluminum we reduce energy consumption by 95% compared to the production of primary aluminum, which represents a clear environmental advantage. Thus, by recycling we reduce the carbon footprint, as well as the carbon footprint of key sectors such as construction, mobility and packaging. Of all materials, aluminum recycling rates are already among the highest in Europe.
The circular economy is a model of economic activity that tends to minimize waste and maximize the use of resources. According to the World Economic Forum, "a circular economy is an industrial system that is restorative or regenerative in intent and design. It replaces the concept of 'end-of-life' with renewal, moves to the use of renewable energy, eliminates the use of toxic chemicals that hinder reuse, and strives to eliminate waste through superior design of materials, products, systems and business models" (World Economic Forum, 2020). This model is based on the principles of sustainability and is often opposed to the traditional linear model of economic activity, which is based on the take-make-throw model of resource use.
The circular economy holds particular promise in achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goal 6 on energy, Goal 8 on economic growth, Goal 11 on sustainable cities, Goal 12 on sustainable consumption and production, Goal 13 on climate change, Goal 14 on the oceans and Goal 15 on life on land.
Circular economy is unthinkable without circular waste management systems. At Emerus, we pay special attention to the management of waste emissions and waste, guided by the principles of reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery (4R principles). Our production facilities are equipped with water purification and recirculation systems. We achieve waste minimization through recycling processes that we carry out internally, as well as in cooperation with our suppliers and partners. The recycling rate of our waste streams is continuously increasing every year.
EMERUS establishes transparency. Most of our products have EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) ecological declarations, prepared according to international standards (ISO 14025, EN 15804). EPD is an independently verified report that transparently and comparably shows the impact of products on the environment during the entire life cycle, by measuring these impacts according to the standardized LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology. It contains 37 environmental parameters, such as global warming potential, ozone depletion, acidification, eutrophication, hazardous and non-hazardous waste generation, recycling rate, ecotoxicity, etc. The independence and certified nature of the EPD ensures accurate and reliable information.
EPD plays an important role in the construction sector, as it enables designers, contractors and other stakeholders to better understand sustainable products and their impact on the environment. Certification systems such as LEED and BREEAM set criteria for sustainability and introduce specific requirements for building objects. Additionally, products that comply with international sustainability standards are the basis of "green" public procurement (GPP - Green Public Procurement).
We actively advocate for sustainability and offer our customers the opportunity to do the same: by choosing EMERUS, they can choose to use aluminum alloys with a low carbon content, i.e. raw materials that contain a higher proportion of recycled products.
The leading principle in planning our future business development is SUSTAINABILITY, which implies a special relationship with the environment as one of the most important resources. Our goal is to reduce the ecological footprint , thus supporting the goals of the European GREEN TRANSITION to achieve climate neutrality and zero pollution.
